Home Improvement Advice for Bathrooms

Fans, Lights, Mirrors, Floor & Taps Do it Yourself Tips for Bathrooms

Exhaust fans can be to help keep steam to a minimum, this will help with condensation, humidity controlled or activated through the light switch and with a 20 minute run on period. But this is not always needed and can be a waste of electricity.

Fans can be fitted and activated when a certain humidity is reached in the room to help with condensation and steam. They are called humidistats and usually start to work, when the room is at 60% relative humidity.

Lights & Mirrors

Mirrors need to be lit, safety first! Pull cord switches should be used or switches on the outside of the bathroom, never touch an electrical socket, switch or appliance with wet hands.

Taps

There are taps available that are controlled through a thermostatically controlled valve. This means that no matter how long a tap is left running the water will not rise above the pre-set temperature. There is a wide choice of styles and colours of taps available to match your bathroom and to suit your tastes. You can match all of your bathroom furniture, such as basin, bath, bidet and taps to match each other.

Flooring

Should be slip resistant, comfortable, washable and water proof. Make sure the flooring is sealed to the edges of room where it meets the skirting board with a silicone bead. Ensure the base is adequate to take your choice of flooring otherwise the finish maybe ruined. For example, if you have a concrete base its wise to lay a self leveling screed. If you have a floorboard base, lay a plywood base normally a minimum of appromixately 12mm thick which should be screwed at 300mm centre. When your flooring is laid it will look and keep in better condition.
