Home Improvement Advice for Garages

Garage Doors Do it Yourself Tips for Garages

A garage door can account for 20% - 30% of the front elevation of your home. Whilst a garage door is not something that you would buy on a regular basis, it can improve both the appearance and the security of your home.

There are various types of doors you may choose from.

Sectional Doors

These are made up using 4 - 6 panels depending on height requirements, there are several heights of panels available, again this helps to offer more height options, by mixing panel heights, they are available in horizontal ribbed or Georgian patterned panels. The Martin range of sectional doors, are pre-finished in a choice of four colours elevating on site painting, plus both styles of sectional doors have a vision window option to enhance the appearance of the door, plus sectional doors can be automated to add that extra touch of luxury. Sectional doors are also useful if you have a short driveway, as the panels lift up vertically, and do not protrude from the front of the building.

Up and Over Doors

Up and over doors are available in four types of construction, Steel, Timber, GRP, & PVCu, and three styles of lifting gear options. All up and over doors come with security locking with two slam latch locking points, several manufacturers offer the option of up to two additional locking points.

Gearing

Up and over canopy and tracked, plus the option of steel frames and side hinged for the old traditional look.

Steel Doors

These are available in primed or fully finished in deep white and a choice of styles. Horizontal, Vertical, Several Georgian Patterns & Chevron. Georgian doors have the option of vision window to enhance the door.

Timber Doors

There are several different options of timber doors. Vertical, Chevron & Traditional Tudor styles with and without windows.

GRP Doors

GRP doors are maintenance free, and are available in a wide range of styles, from plain styles through to Georgian and Tudor styles, available in Gloss White finishes, and a whole host of woodgrain finishes, and again these doors are available with the options of windows.

PVCu Doors

These are the same as GRP doors except that they only come in white gloss.

Roller Doors

These work similar to the sectional doors, they are only available in the horizontal style of door. There are a couple of finish options. Colour coat steel and plastisol steel. The advantage with the roller door over the sectional door is it rolls up saving space in the ceiling of your garage.

Automated Doors

All types of garage doors can be automated. There are three styles of operators, Chain, Belt and Worm Drive. You also have the option of personalising your operator - safety reverse beams and different handset options. Handsets work from approximately 20-25 years using a radio signal.
