Home Improvement Advice for Garages

Frequently Asked Questions Do it Yourself Tips for Garages

How much should I spend on my garage door?

The cost of the door is determined by the following:

Door size

Style

Finish - Steel, Timber or GRP

Extras - windows and electric operation

Obviously a door built to a high specification, for example a GRP door, is more expensive than a steel door. You should bear in mind however, that as a GRP door is of a superior quality it will require very little up keep. Whereas a primed steel door will require painting every couple of years to help maintain its appearance.

What size garage door do I need?

All door opening sizes differ from garage to garage. Different door styles and actions require different sized frames. For example a canopy door can be fitted using 2 inch timber, whilst a sectional door requires a 4 inch timber and a roller can be installed direct to the brickwork. Garages Southwest said that this should not worry you as they (as should other reputable companies in your area) would visit and advise you what would be best for your opening, taking the framework and clearances into account.

Which design will be right for my home?

Your garage can account for up to 30% of the front elevation of your home. As such it can have a major impact on how your home will look. It is important therefore, that you choose the correct design that will help personalise your home now, but that you will still enjoy in 10, 15 or even 20 years time.

When making your decision, you will have to take into consideration not only the current style of your home but also how the door will look in the surrounding area. Some local authorities may require you to obtain planning permission before changing your door.

What lifting gear should I choose?

This decision is just as important as the colour and material. Do you need your garage door to have extra height or width to accommodate tall or large vehicles? You wouldn't want to purchase a new garage door only to find that your car is too high or too wide to clear the door panel or lifting gear.

What accessories are worth considering?

This is the final decision that you would need to make. Accessories can help add your own personal finishing touch to your door.

The electric option - probably the best accessory that you could choose, not only does it allow you to open and close your new garage door from the comfort of your car, it will also add value to your home. Additionally, it will also encourage you to actually park your car in the garage overnight, saving it not only from the elements, but also from the risk of theft.

Designer windows - not only does this option add style to your new door, it also allows natural light into your garage thus saving on your electricity bills.

Do you get guarantees?

All products will be guaranteed by the relevant manufacturer, some for as long as 15 years. However, Garage Doors South West - follows up manufacturers guarantees with an additional labour guarantee on all installations. Check that your chosen installer for your area does the same.
