Internal Doors Do it Yourself Tips for Handicapped Access

Widening Doorways

This will enable a wheelchair to fit through the door with ease. The minimum opening size is 900cm but you should speak to your local council because each borough will vary. Please telephone your local council for advice.

Re-placing Doors with Bi-fold or Sliding Doors

This allows the opening and closing of a door without the wheelchair getting in the way. A bi-fold door folds in the centre as it opens, whereas a sliding door will slide to the side and not fold.

Re-hang Door to Open Opposite Way

Allow the wheelchair to go through the door without it being opened towards the person in the wheelchair. The door can swing open in both directions.
