Bathrooms Do it Yourself Tips for Handicapped Access

To fit a disabled bathroom

A bathroom for a person with disabilities needs to be adapted so as it is easier for the person in the wheelchair and / or a helper.

Shower

The shower area has an easily accessible shower with or without a seat, one of the side panels can be removed to allow wheelchair access to the seat.

Toilet

A toilet is raised to allow transfer from wheelchair to the toilet easier, it can also be raised to help the action of standing up.

Taps

The taps are changed on the basin and bath to lever action so that they do not have to be gripped/held to turn. Through a thermostatically controlled valve, you can have temperature controlled taps, which prevents scolding.

Sink

The sink is lowered (if needed) so that it is assessable from a wheelchair.

Body Dryer

So as the person in the wheelchair can either sit or stand infront of the dryer to be dried. This is helpful if balancing is a problem.

Non Slip Flooring

This is flooring that does not become slippery when wet. It is easily available from most flooring suppliers.
