Home Improvement Advice for Insulation

Do it Yourself Tips for Insulation

Cylinders & Plumbing

Insulation is used to slow down heat loss in your home. The initial cost of insulating your home is aimed to be recovered in your gas/electricity bills in the future and the savings you will make through no longer losing as much heat.

Any insulation material used should be subject to an Agrement Certificate from the British Board of Agreement or kitemarked to a British Standard. This will ensure that the material is fit for use.

Hot Water Cylinder Jackets

They come in all sizes to fit all cylinders. To find the correct size of your cylinder you measure the height and diameter, and the jacket should be at least 3 inches thick. The cap and cables leading to the immersion heater should not be covered.

Insulating the storage cistern; expanded polystyrene panels are used to insulate most types of storage cistern and central heating expansion tanks. It is possible to use blanket insulation around the cistern or tank. This is normally secured with string or tape

Insulating Plumbing

Pipes can be insulated to stop them from freezing in extreme weather, the main pipes to insulate are supply pipes to and from the cistern/tank, the valves and overflow pipes. The easiest material to use is split foam lagging, you wrap it over the bare pipes. It should be about 1inch thick and held in place with PVC tape.
