Home Improvement Advice for Insulation

Draft Proofing & Internal Insulation Do it Yourself Tips for Insulation

This is quite a cheap method of insulation and is done by sealing gaps around windows and doors, floors can also be done. Although it may appear a good idea to put a stop to all drafts throughout the house, ventilation of this kind is needed for several reasons:

There needs to be a constant supply of oxygen for breathing

To remove carbon dioxide and water vapour

To prevent mould growing from a high humidity environment

If you will be using a shower in a room, ventilation will be needed to change the humidity level and to remove the water vapour produced.

If you are using a fuel fire (eg gas) it is essential that there is ventilation through a chimney as you need to extract all of the harmful gases and fumes.

Think about extractor fans. Make sure your builder takes this into consideration.

Internal Insulation

This will reduce the size of the room. Internal window frames, cills, door frames, sockets, switches and lights will all be changed as you will be changing the thickness of the wall. The walls will have to be redecorated after. The first thing that needs doing is to fix a timber framework to the walls, then plasterboard sheets are fitted to the framework between this and the new wall, insulating material is inserted. The alternative method is to put thermal board onto your existing wall. Walls should be free from damp before this work is carried out and needs to be flat.
